Google Ads has two refund routes. Validated invalid activity becomes a billing credit, either when filtered before billing or after manual review. Closing the account returns unused prepaid funds, excluding promotional credits, to the original payment method. Campaign-setting mistakes and poor performance do not qualify.
How to request a Google Ads refund
A Google Ads refund request follows one of two routes. Google may issue an invalid-activity credit for clicks it accepts as invalid, or repay unused prepaid funds after account closure, excluding promotional credits. The credit appears only as a billing line, never as cash on your card, while closure funds return to the original payment method.
This guide explains both processes: which evidence supports an invalid clicks claim, where to submit it, the expected review time, and what happens to unused funds after cancellation. For a brief explanation of the credit mechanics, see our Google Ads refund and invalid-activity credit guide.
What Google refunds and what it excludes
Google recognises exactly two circumstances in which an advertiser receives money back. All other spend remains spent.
| Refund route | What qualifies | How it is returned |
|---|---|---|
| Credit for invalid activity | Clicks missed by Google's filters and later judged invalid: bots, repeated clicks, competitor click fraud | An Invalid Activity line item in your Google Ads billing |
| Refund after account closure | Remaining unused prepaid funds when the account is cancelled, with promotional credits excluded | The payment method originally used |
No third route is available. Google does not reimburse losses caused by your campaign settings, an overactive broad match or a forgotten budget cap. It assesses invalid clicks claims by traffic quality, never by campaign performance.
How to request an invalid clicks investigation
Most invalid clicks are filtered by Google before billing. A manual claim covers traffic that escaped those filters. The result depends on the strength of the supporting evidence, which makes the sequence below important.
Collect evidence at click level
Record your customer ID, affected campaigns and precise date range. Gather evidence of the pattern, including server logs, analytics exports, repeating IPs, GCLIDs and a screenshot of a regional click spike. Specific documentation carries more weight than a general complaint about higher costs. Act quickly: Google's invalid-traffic investigations look back no more than 60 days, so older clicks are outside the claim window.
Send the invalid clicks form
Submit your claim with Google's click quality form in the Ads Help Center. Provide the campaigns, billing account, dates and your reason for classifying the clicks as invalid, then attach the evidence. Our guide explaining how to report click fraud to Google takes you through every form field.
Check the result in Billing
Google provides no ongoing status updates. When a correction is approved, an Invalid Activity credit appears under Billing and is either deducted from the invoice or added to your balance. No entry after the review period means Google denied the claim.
How long does a Google Ads refund take?
Timing is determined by the refund route.
- Credits applied automatically: if Google validates flagged traffic in real time, it filters the click before billing or restores the credit to your daily budget that same day.
- Manual review: an investigation into invalid clicks typically runs for 4 to 8 weeks. Roughly 5% of contested clicks have historically been approved and credited.
- Refund on account closure: Google allows up to 2 weeks for processing, after which your bank may need additional time.
Where can you check a refund request?
Google Ads has no dedicated status page for refund requests. Instead, the outcome is visible in two places.
Start with billing. Follow Billing > Transactions or Documents, then find line items labelled Invalid Activity or Invalid Clicks. Approved credits appear there, either reducing the invoice or increasing your balance.
The other view covers clicks that never appeared on an invoice. In the campaign table, follow Columns > Modify columns > Performance, then enable Invalid clicks and Invalid click rate. Because Google filtered these clicks before billing, you paid nothing for them and do not need to file a claim.
How to recover unused balance after closing an account
For many people, this is what they mean by a Google Ads refund, although click quality is unrelated. You need administrator access to the account.
- From the Admin menu, select Account settings.
- Expand Account status, then select Cancel my account.
- Google automatically sends the unused prepaid funds that remain, excluding promotional credits, back to your original payment method.
Before confirming, review Google's estimated refunds for cancelled accounts page to see what follows. Google's processing can take up to 2 weeks, with your bank's own processing time added afterwards.
What to do if Google denies the claim
The majority of manual claims are denied, usually with scant explanation. Google intentionally withholds click-level details such as the IP, detected pattern and why a click passed its checks. Revealing them could allow fraudsters to reverse engineer the filters. That protects the system from abuse, but leaves advertisers unable to verify the decision.
A narrower date range and click-level evidence can support a resubmission better than a general complaint. Use the roughly 5% approval rate when planning, and regard the claims process as a final recovery option rather than a strategy.
Preventing invalid clicks beats claiming later
No refund is required for a click that gets blocked. Real-time protection against click fraud stops invalid sources from reaching your ads before billing, a better prospect than a 5% chance of receiving credit several weeks afterwards.
As a Google Certified Click Tracker, ClickPatrol automatically files invalid-traffic reports with timestamps, IP data and device fingerprints for a reviewer to assess. Any resulting credits still appear in Google Ads billing. More importantly, Smart Bidding stops optimising for reported traffic and retrains on real customers rather than bots.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I get a refund from Google Ads?
What is the deadline for claiming invalid clicks?
Google accepts invalid-traffic claims only for clicks from the previous 60 days; anything older sits outside the claim window. Submit the invalid clicks form as soon as the evidence reveals a suspicious pattern. After submission, Google's manual investigation typically takes a further 4 to 8 weeks.
Are promotional credits refunded after account closure?
Promotional credits are excluded from an account-closure refund. After you cancel Google Ads, Google returns only the remaining unused prepaid funds that you paid into the account. The money goes back to the original payment method. Allow up to 2 weeks for Google processing, followed by any extra time your bank requires.
Will Google Ads credits appear in ClickPatrol?
Google's credits do not appear in the ClickPatrol dashboard. Find them in Google Ads under Billing > Transactions, where they are listed as Invalid Activity line items. ClickPatrol separately reports the traffic it blocked and predicted budget reallocation, so that dashboard figure is not the amount Google credits back.
